Blatz Beer Bottle Doors by Johnsen Schmaling Architects

Architect: Johnsen Schmaling Architects
Location: Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
Project team: Brian Johnsen, AIA; Sebastian Schmaling, AIA
Project Area: 836 sqm
Project year: 2007
Photographs: Kevin Miyazaki

Valentin Blatz Brewing Company was an American beer producer from 1851 to 1959. It’s home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin is now on the national register of historic places, a central part of Milwaukee’s brewing history. In the 1980s, the vacant building was rehabbed to house offices and apartments, referred to on the street as “The Blatz”. Today, The Blatz has been fully refreshed by Johnsen Schmaling Architects, using some of the building’s own history (and product) in it’s eco-conscious design.

The Blatz building’s lower level lounge features a series of doors constructed of empty beer bottles. Each of these doors is nine feet tall and just over nine feet wide, pivoting smoothly on a central axis. These bright amber doors open and close to partition off smaller, more intimate areas of the lounge– or open wide for a larger experience. The bottles themselves are true to Blatz Brewing, having been recovered from a basement storage area and given duty again in the building’s new purpose.

Roof Pavilion
The roof pavilion consists of a simple steel superstructure constructed from a set of prefabricated shop-assembled elements that were lifted up onto the roof by a crane and connected in the field. A kit of polyacrylic sheets can be attached to the trellis beams for overhead screening. Thin LED strips are mounted to the underside of the trellis beams to provide ambiance lighting for the terrace. Simultaneously, the illuminated roof pavilion activates the corner of the building and transforms into a small neighborhood beacon, visible from dozens of blocks away.

Atherton Residence by Turnbull Griffin Haesloop Architects

This beautiful stunning atherton residence with its clean and simple minimalist interior inspiration is designed by Turnbull Griffin Haesloop Architects. The residence is nestled between San Francisco and San Jose in California’s great bay. The Atherton Residence an urban escape with passionate focus on nature. This home features a sustainable, conscious design that rests upon a calm pond and quiet, flowing trees as it’s backdrop. The Atherton Residence features a solar hot water system on it’s roof, radiant floors and natural ventilation for cooling in the hot summer.

The previous 1950’s house, which was removed due to structural problems, featured mature landscaping and a manmade pond that the clients wanted to preserve. They wanted their new house to be a private retreat that maximizes the drama of the pond and takes advantage of the privacy of the site. As advocates of year round outdoor dining and entertaining, the clients wanted a house that would open up to the landscape and have as many outdoor rooms as possible.

The design solution breaks the program into four buildings – main house, study, pool house and garage – that ring the edge of the site and focus inwards on the pond, garden and pool. The main house features a butterfly roof that turns up to the south with a dramatic overhang. Large sliding glass doors open directly out to the pond and terrace. The roofs conceal photovoltaic and solar hot water panels.

The house is heated with a radiant system in the stone floors, and despite the hot climate it is not air conditioned, but passively cooled with a combination of overhangs, shades, and operable windows. The house also features many green building materials, including high fly-ash concrete, formaldehyde-free casework and denim insulation. The new house creates a special place for the clients, making a main residence feel like a vacation retreat.

Evolutie by Tom Dissel for furniture manufacturer Leolux

This cool seating design inspiration is created by Tom Dissel, a student at the Design Academy Eindhoven, has worked together with the Dutch furniture manufacturer Leolux to design a coat that can also be used as a chair cover whtich named as “Evolutiv Coat Chair”

Evolutie Coat/Chair by Tom Dissel:

I created my design because I did a research about the battered places on old furniture. This are the specific places that are used intensively, which are the scars. The other parts are intact and contain no traces of usage and you can leave it out. It is redundant. Animals and humans also have body parts that are no longer of use to a evolution them: coccyx, vermiform appendix, etc etc

This means I create a shape and make it less massive. Now you only show the essence on what it’s all about. Every piece of furniture is like a garment. Just think with me for a moment and watch: the chairs shell fits perfectly. The chair as a coat. on and off, on and off, on?

The coat represents its sitting comfort. The coat covers, but is also flexible. The coat shows that a lot is possible, its frame functions as a peg.
Literally: by placing the coat on the right spot immediately.
Figurative: its sitting comfort is shown by hanging it up. The coat becomes the chair and you’ve created a comfortable place to sit.

Once put on, the coat covers up the old contrast. Between bare and dressed, inside and outside and between light and filled. This chair is more than just a piece of clothing, it has the irregular mark of a human body. It expresses the personality of this piece of furniture. The chair is coated with the skin of imagination. This chair’s fit is simply perfect.
