Formosa 1140 Housing Project by Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects

Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects (LOHA) have projected Formosa 1140, a new eleven-unit modern housing project located in West Hollywood, California. As a multi-family building, the residential density Formosa 1140 facilitates is inherently more sustainable than almost any free-standing, single-family dwelling. The facade of this Formosa 1140 is clad in red, metal panels that provide shade for the windows and separate the circulation of residents from the public domain.

A multi-colored metallic skin wraps the 11-home, 4-story structure, diffusing light & heat while defining views & privacy. Rare in LA to find new townhomes built at a park. Rarer still a vest-pocket park built around new townhomes. But once again, Habitat Group – with the City of West Hollywood – has developed and integrated both, resulting in livable village urbanity.

The unique front unit faces street and park and extends to 3 levels of entry foyer/den, upper living room, 2 bedrooms, 3 baths & large terrace. The remaining 2-story units, on 2 tiers, comprise open living/dining/kitchen areas with study & bath on one floor, while 2 bedrooms, 2 baths occupy another floor, with balconies. While 4 top-tier units enjoy roof deck views of the Hollywood hills, all units partake in Hollywood hubbub & neighborhood bustle.
